History of Agriculture sector in India

-Babu Rajendra Prasad was the first Agriculture Minister in Nehru’s cabinet

                 from 1947 to 1950. Later he became first President of India

  • First Five year plan priority was Agriculture 1951-56
  • It was Harrod-Domar model planning
  • Growth rate during the period was 3.6% more than expected
  • Second five year plan  priority was Industrial development
  • Niti Ayog was formed during NDA -1 regime with Planning commission

                 Involving states participation

  • Food staples- Rice, wheat, and pulses, potato, Sugarcane, oil seeds, cotton,

        Tea, coffee, rubber and jute are important besides fisheries

  • 70% of the rural households depend on agriculture in India
  • 82% of them are small and marginal farmers
  • Agriculture production has become costly
  • Suicides by farmers due to bad income
  • Total food grain production during 2019-20 was 295 million tons
  • India is second world wide in farm outputs
  • Gross value added by agriculture and fisheries is 19.48 crore rupees
