History of Agriculture sector in India
-Babu Rajendra Prasad was the first Agriculture Minister in Nehru’s cabinet
from 1947 to 1950. Later he became first President of India
- First Five year plan priority was Agriculture 1951-56
- It was Harrod-Domar model planning
- Growth rate during the period was 3.6% more than expected
- Second five year plan priority was Industrial development
- Niti Ayog was formed during NDA -1 regime with Planning commission
Involving states participation
- Food staples- Rice, wheat, and pulses, potato, Sugarcane, oil seeds, cotton,
Tea, coffee, rubber and jute are important besides fisheries
- 70% of the rural households depend on agriculture in India
- 82% of them are small and marginal farmers
- Agriculture production has become costly
- Suicides by farmers due to bad income
- Total food grain production during 2019-20 was 295 million tons
- India is second world wide in farm outputs
- Gross value added by agriculture and fisheries is 19.48 crore rupees
- Agriculture is the primary source of income for 58% of our population
